Little Apothecary Lessons: What is Rose Congou Tea?
The name “Congou” comes from an old Western rendering of the Chinese gongfu, referring to skill and careful workmanship. The term became associated with carefully produced Chinese black teas that were once an important part of the European tea trade.
So how is Rose Congou produced?
The freshly picked tea leaves first go through the traditional stages of black-tea production: withering, rolling, oxidation and drying. This develops the dark leaves and rich, rounded character of the finished tea.
Then comes the roses.
Traditionally, the black tea is scented or blended with fragrant rose petals, allowing the tea leaves to take on their delicate floral perfume. Depending upon the producer, this may involve repeated scenting, and some of the petals may remain amongst the finished leaves.
A good Rose Congou isn’t simply about making tea taste strongly of roses. The beauty lies in the balance—the depth and body of the black tea remains, while the rose adds a softer, beautifully aromatic layer.
And we’ve taken that idea a little further at Apothecary & Leaf.
Our Broadway Lovers Rose begins with Rose Congou tea, which we blend with rose petals and natural cardamom flavors. The rose brings its unmistakable floral fragrance, while cardamom adds a warm, gently aromatic dimension behind it.
So inside a cup of Broadway Lovers Rose you’ll find a lovely progression:
Black tea for richness. Rose for perfume. Cardamom for warmth.
A traditional style of scented tea, given a distinctly Apothecary & Leaf twist.
