When a cardinal appears, a loved one is near

on Oct 26 2026
When someone we care about is grieving, finding the right gift can be difficult. Flowers are beautiful, but sometimes you want to give something that lasts a little longer—something they can keep, use or wear, and perhaps think of their loved one each time they see it. That’s one of the reasons I love the symbolism of the cardinal. For many people, the bright red cardinal has become associated with remembrance, hope and the comforting thought that those we have lost are still somehow close to us. You may have heard the familiar sentiment that when a cardinal appears, a loved one is near. It isn’t a universal belief, but it has become a particularly meaningful symbol of memorial and remembrance for many families. At Apothecary & Leaf, we have brought together a small collection of cardinal-inspired gifts that can carry that sentiment long after a bouquet of flowers has faded. There’s our handmade cardinal mug—something that can become part of an everyday ritual, perhaps bringing a little reminder with every cup of tea. We also have beautifully handcrafted pewter cardinal pieces including a necklace, earrings, brooch pin and keyring, offering something that can be worn or carried close every day. And the cardinal doesn’t only have to represent loss. It can also represent love, family and the continuation of life, which is why we also have a cardinal swaddle designed as a thoughtful way to welcome a new little arrival into the family. Sometimes the most meaningful gifts are the ones that quietly become part of everyday life—a mug reached for each morning, a necklace worn close to the heart, or a small cardinal carried wherever life takes you. A lasting little reminder of someone loved, remembered and never far from thought

Polperro Moonlight & Pear Mocktail

on Oct 26 2026
An elegant, caffeine-free evening mocktail A delicate, floral mocktail inspired by moonlit evenings overlooking Polperro’s peaceful Cornish harbour. Sweet pear, fragrant jasmine and a whisper of honey complement the calming botanicals of Polperro Dreams. Beautifully simple to prepare and perfect for winding down before bedtime. Ingredients – Serves 1 ½ cup strongly brewed Polperro Dreams, cooled ¼ cup pure pear juice 1 tsp honey ½ tsp fresh lemon juice Ice Thin pear slice and a small sprig of fresh thyme for garnish Method Brew Polperro Dreams according to its recommended instructions, using slightly less water for a stronger infusion. Strain and cool completely. Stir the honey into the tea while still warm. Add the cooled tea, pear juice and lemon juice to a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake gently until chilled. Strain into a pretty coupe glass and garnish with a delicate pear slice and fresh thyme. Why it works: The pear brings natural sweetness without overpowering the jasmine and linden flowers, while a touch of lemon complements the blend’s lemon myrtle. No alcohol, caffeine or fizzy mixers—just a beautiful botanical nightcap. Apothecary Note: Polperro Dreams contains valerian root, which can cause drowsiness. Avoid combining it with alcohol, sedatives or other sleep aids

Meet the Makers — Taylor and April Locke

on Oct 16 2026
Some businesses begin with a business plan. Others begin with two people, a shared love of making things by hand, and an idea that quietly grows into something much bigger. Taylor and April Locke met in 2006 in beautiful Savannah, Georgia, while studying at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). By 2013, as they were preparing to build a life together, they were also laying the foundations for a handcrafted, all-natural body care business. That October, they married barefoot among hay bales beneath the wide Texas sky, on family land in Central Texas. Soon afterwards, they left Savannah behind and put down roots in a small Texas town, ready to grow both a family and their new venture. What began as a side project in their kitchen soon became a calling. Today, Taylor, April, and their team continue to create their body care products using clean, thoughtfully chosen ingredients and time-tested methods, staying true to the values on which the business was founded. At Apothecary & Leaf, we’re delighted to carry a large selection of their handcrafted products, including magnesium creams, men’s beard care, room & body sprays, essential oils, rose water, makeup remover, roll-ons, and a beautiful collection of moisturizing and botanical salves. And when Taylor and April aren’t working alongside their truly awesome team? You’ll most likely find them cheering from the sidelines of a Little League field, digging in the garden, or continuing the never-ending adventure of renovating their 100-year-old farmhouse. It’s exactly the kind of small, independent maker we love discovering — real people, making thoughtful products with a story behind them. Meet the makers behind the things we choose to bring into Apothecary & Leaf.
