The Potter’s Wheel Black Loose Leaf Tea – 4 oz Tin

Classic Indian and Ceylon black teas offering brightness, balance and satisfying character.

The Potter’s Wheel celebrates the proud heritage of Stoke-on-Trent, where the ceramic industry shaped the landscape and the lives of generations of local families. In the days when bottle ovens dominated the skyline, thousands of men and women worked in the potbanks, learning skills passed from one generation to the next.

Tea was an essential part of the working day. At break time, the tea lady would push her trolley through the workshops, serving strong, steaming mugs to potters, painters, mold makers and kiln workers. These were robust, satisfying brews chosen for their bright flavor and brisk character—just the thing to revive tired workers before they returned to their craft.

This blend holds a particularly special place in my heart. Having worked in the pottery industry in Stoke-on-Trent—affectionately known as The Potteries—for many years, its story feels especially personal to me. It brings back memories of the people, craftsmanship and proud working traditions that made the city famous around the world.

Inspired by that heritage, black teas from India and Sri Lanka come together to create a bright amber cup with an inviting aroma, medium body and clean, refreshing finish. Balanced, dependable and full of character, The Potter’s Wheel is a fitting tribute to the hardworking spirit of The Potteries and the generations of craftspeople whose skill shaped its remarkable story.

The Potter's Wheel is a bold, bright black tea blend with a lovely briskness and refreshing character. The combination of Assam, Darjeeling, and Ceylon creates a well-balanced cup that has plenty of presence without feeling too heavy.

I especially enjoyed the refreshing quality of this tea. It has a lively character that makes each sip enjoyable, and I found it held up beautifully on its own without milk or sweetener.

A wonderfully balanced black tea that is both satisfying and refreshing.

I enjoyed this one brewed on its own, without adding any sweetness or cream. It had a pleasant briskness without becoming astringent, although it did leave a soft, dry feeling on my palate. Sometimes I enjoy a tea just as it is, and this was one of those cups.

I paired it with toast topped with peanut butter and honey, and the two made a surprisingly lovely combination. The richness of the peanut butter and sweetness of the honey worked nicely alongside the tea’s brisk character.

I also love the story behind the name. Potter’s Wheel is a nod to Stoke-on-Trent, known as The Potteries, and the tradition of tea ladies bringing a welcome break and a strong cup of tea to the workers in the pottery factories. It’s especially meaningful knowing Lindsey, the owner, spent years working in that industry herself. It gives this blend a little history and a personal connection beyond what’s in the cup.

Another enjoyable discovery from Apothecary & Leaf!

This tea is bright, fruity, and robust. This medium-bodied tea had a unique sweet muscatel note, which I would say is from the darjeeling. I had this as an afternoon tea, but could easily drink this as a breakfast tea. I didn’t cold-brew this one, but I’m sure it would also be fantastic brewed that way. This was yet another amazing selection from Apothecary & Leaf!

This tea was gifted to me by the company, and I am providing my honest review.

This tea has the strong, malty aroma of Assam with a bit of the sweet muscatel notes that some Darjeeling teas have. It has the bold, brisk taste of an Assam with the delicate, floral flavor of Darjeeling. I am also picking up a little bit of the citrus, brightness that comes from the Ceylon. This cup of tea is complex and sophisticated. It is wonderfully balanced.

Assam: the malty favorite, Ceylon: brisk and light, and Darjeeling: the champagne of teas.

I'm not at all surprised that this tea brewed up so perfectly. The balance of the three black tea varieties is absolutely on point. I can smell and taste a light floral and grape note from the Darjeeling, a little maltiness from the Assam, and Ceylon for a smooth, clean finish with a gentle citrus twist. For me, this is one I would enjoy for my mid-afternoon brew, but would be great for your breakfast tea as well.

The aroma is sweet. Upon brewing at 212 for 3 minutes; I poured this beauty and enjoyed it on my patio. It is a distinguished blend of three high quality black teas. The flavor of this complex blend is brisk and clean. I would suggest enjoying in the mornings to get your day going.

I received this tea in exchange for my honest review.

The Potter’s Wheel is such a lovely example of what I enjoy about a good, classic black tea. The moment I see that beautiful, dark amber liquor in my cup, I know I’m in for a satisfying cuppa!
This blend of classic Indian and Ceylon black teas offers a wonderful balance of boldness and smoothness. I love the robust, malty flavor that comes through from the Indian tea. It gives the cup a lovely depth and a substantial, rounded body without becoming too heavy or overpowering. The Ceylon adds just the right amount of briskness, bringing a lively, crisp finish that keeps me coming back for another sip.
What I appreciate most is how well these two teas complement each other. Even with its rich, full flavor, the tea isn’t overly tannic or harsh. Instead, it’s smooth, well-rounded, and wonderfully balanced from the first sip to the last.
For me, this is the kind of versatile black tea I could easily reach for any time of day. It’s lovely all on its own when I want to savor the flavor, but I think it would also hold up beautifully to a splash of milk. If you enjoy a traditional, malty black tea with a little liveliness and plenty of character, The Potter’s Wheel is definitely one to add to your tea cupboard!

Described as "bright, brisk, and beautifully balanced black tea with a refreshing finish," The Potter's Wheel is my favorite of the three black teas I've reviewed from Apothecary & Leaf!

The instructions give a range of temperature from 200-212F at 1 tsp per 6 ounces for 3 minutes. I went for the lighter side at 200F and am ashamed to admit I got distracted and let it steep for about six or seven minutes. I thought for sure I would have a bitter or astringent tea I would need to toss and remake properly, but lo and behold this lemon drop colored liquor wound up being perfect for me!

I found this to be far more refreshing, light-bodied, and naturally sweet. Notes of candied pear come to mind, making this an ideal autumn tea and an excellent base for a refreshing iced tea.

Inspired by the rich pottery heritage of Stoke-on-Trent, The Potter’s Wheel is a beautifully balanced black tea celebrating generations of skilled craftspeople and their cherished tea traditions.

The infusion reveals a lovely amber liquor with inviting aromas of bright citrus, gentle malt, and delicate florals. On the palate, Ceylon leads with lively citrus notes, while Assam contributes restrained maltiness and subtle cocoa undertones. Darjeeling adds a delicate whisper of green freshness, creating a wonderfully harmonious cup.

With its medium body, crisp mouthfeel, and pleasantly brisk finish, this blend offers a refreshing interpretation of traditional British black tea. A lovely tribute to craftsmanship, heritage, and the enduring pleasure of a properly brewed cup.

This black tea was amazing! It's bold and brisk yet remarkably smooth, delivering an incredible depth of flavor. I really enjoyed this one plain, I thought the flavor was really good but could see this holding up well to milk and sugar. This is a great tea to have first thing in the morning or if you need an afternoon pick me up! I can definitely see myself making this my go-to each day. Highly recommend!

I used 2 tsp of tea, steeped at 212° for 3 minutes

This tea was gifted to me by purveyor, but all opinions are my own.

I followed the package directions with 1 teaspoon of tea to 6-8 oz water at 210 F. This tea has a beautiful golden color after steeping.
It was a busy morning but this tea made me stop, sit and sip.
This is one of the tea's that you simply enjoy!
It has a medium body golden liquor with a smooth finish that is somehow so enjoyable that you just want to sit and enjoy without distraction.
Great job to Apothecary and Leaf - A winner I can't wait to try more from this company.

Potter’s Wheel is the cup of tea I need to wake me up in the morning. It’s bright, like the sun peeking through the blinds of my home office, greeting me with a new day. It’s brisk, lively, and energetic; I feel ready to face whatever challenges today will bring.

The brew has a mild yet necessary astringency, lingering notes of fruit and spice on the palate, and each sip leaves me wanting more. With a dash of sugar and a splash of milk, it is the perfect, optimistic transition into the new day.
